When Torchwood’s latest case involves miracle cures, missing people, and suspicious injections, who better to call than a doctor? (And no, not that one — the other one with far fewer regenerations.)
Short Synopsis
Torchwood investigates a series of mysterious deaths linked to an experimental drug that can “reset” the human body to a pristine, disease-free state. Enter Martha Jones, UNIT’s new medical officer, who joins the team to help crack the case. Unfortunately, the miracle cure turns out to come with an alien parasite bonus pack.
Extended Storyline
Cardiff’s been weird lately — even by Torchwood standards. People with chronic diseases are turning up dead, but not before they’ve been miraculously cured of everything from diabetes to terminal cancer. The bodies all have one thing in common: their immune systems are wiped clean, as if rebooted by some cosmic antivirus software.
Jack brings in an expert — Dr. Martha Jones (yes, the same one who walked the Earth and saved humanity from the Master’s grand mustache-twirling). She’s traded her TARDIS key for a UNIT badge and is now using her medical know-how to deal with the non-timey-wimey kind of alien trouble. The Torchwood boys are immediately impressed. Owen flirts. Jack flirts harder. Ianto quietly recalibrates the coffee machine in protest.
The team traces the phenomenon to the Pharm, a sinister medical research company running “volunteer trials” for a revolutionary treatment. Volunteers are injected with a compound that “resets” their biology—essentially rebooting them to factory settings. Unfortunately, it also installs an unwanted alien parasite called a Mayfly, which eventually bursts out of the host in true sci-fi chestburster fashion.
Martha volunteers to go undercover (because apparently Torchwood’s HR form for “dangerous self-endangerment” is just a Post-It). She infiltrates the Pharm, posing as a patient, and discovers the alien mayflies kept in stasis and used for their regenerative properties. Of course, she gets injected, and the mayfly starts growing inside her. Cue panic, scanners, and Jack’s best “don’t you dare die on me” face.
While the team races to save Martha, Owen manages to extract the parasite with some surgical ingenuity and his usual level of bedside snark. With her life saved, Martha rejoins the group for one final mission: storming the Pharm. They uncover the ringleader, Professor Copley, who’s been running unethical trials in the name of scientific progress (and a shiny profit margin). In the ensuing chaos, Owen is forced to shoot Copley to protect Martha. The Pharm is shut down, the remaining mayflies destroyed, and Torchwood emerges victorious—if slightly traumatized.
Jack, ever the charming enigma, offers Martha a place on the team. She politely declines, possibly realizing one can only survive so many alien autopsies before the pension plan stops mattering.
