The Macra Terror

The story where giant crabs run a holiday camp, and the Doctor foxtrots his way to freedom.

Short Synopsis

The Doctor, Ben, Polly, and Jamie land in a cheerful future colony that’s all smiles, marching, and suspiciously upbeat jingles. Behind the enforced happiness? The Macra — giant crab creatures who control the colonists through brainwashing and bad choreography.

Extended Storyline

Arriving in a futuristic colony that looks like Butlins-on-steroids, the TARDIS crew are greeted with parades, cheerfulness, and a whole lot of forced jazz hands. The people here live under the benevolent rule of the Pilot and the “Controller,” whose soothing voice pipes through every speaker with slogans like “Happiness is Duty!” and “Work Makes You Cheerful!” (subtlety was not the order of the day).

The Doctor immediately senses something is wrong. Jamie is baffled, Polly thinks the place is lovely, and Ben… well, Ben basically joins a cult in about five minutes flat. He gets zapped with the colony’s brainwashing treatment and suddenly turns into a Stepford Sailor, insisting that the colony is perfect and that “Work is fun!” (Spoiler: it isn’t.)

The true masters of the colony turn out to be the Macra — giant, lumbering crab monsters with claws big enough to serve salad for 50. They live underground, feeding on poisonous gas, and use the colonists as free labor to pump the stuff out. It’s essentially a dystopian Shell Oil ad.

The Doctor, of course, resists the brainwashing by being far too eccentric to be hypnotized. He gleefully sabotages machines, sneaks into restricted zones, and at one point starts dancing around a hypnotic control device just to prove he’s not under its sway. Patrick Troughton turns subversion into slapstick, and it’s glorious.

Jamie, not to be left out, winds up being chased around tunnels by an enormous crab claw. It looks terrifying in the reconstructions, though back in the day it probably resembled a pantomime lobster trying to hug him to death. Polly screams, gets captured, screams some more, and eventually becomes the Macra’s latest gas-breathing guinea pig.

Eventually, the Doctor rallies the non-brainwashed colonists, smashes the gas control system, and kills the Macra in a massive explosion. The happy, cheerful colony is restored… only now without the part where the citizens are enslaved by crabs. The story ends with everyone throwing a parade in the Doctor’s honor, which he immediately ruins by sneaking back into the TARDIS before they can make him wave from a float.
