The Crusade

“Chivalry, chainmail, and casual kidnapping: welcome to the Holy Land, Who-style.”

Short Synopsis

The Doctor, Ian, Barbara, and Vicki land smack in the middle of the 12th-century Crusades, where Richard the Lionheart and Saladin are locked in a perpetual game of thrones, minus the dragons but with just as much scheming. Barbara gets kidnapped (again), Ian gets knighted (finally some respect!), and the Doctor cons his way into royal favor with the grace of a man who’s been bluffing through life since 1963.

Extended Storyline

The TARDIS pops down in the middle of the Holy Land during the actual Crusades, which is a bit like turning up at a Renaissance fair but discovering the swords aren’t rubber. The crew quickly finds themselves in deep historical waters. Barbara is snatched away by Saracen soldiers almost immediately, proving once more that she should really consider investing in medieval pepper spray.

Meanwhile, the Doctor, Ian, and Vicki wander into Richard the Lionheart’s camp. The Doctor, armed with his greatest weapon — smug confidence and a gift for talking in circles — manages to impress King Richard himself. Ian, however, is knighted and ordered to rescue Barbara, which makes him look heroic but also leaves him dangerously close to being skewered by anyone with a sharper sword and a shorter temper.

Barbara, in her own subplot, finds herself a pawn in Saladin’s court. And credit where credit’s due: Saladin isn’t a cackling villain but rather a surprisingly nuanced opponent who treats Barbara with courtesy, albeit while still holding her hostage like an extra piece in his game of political chess.

Meanwhile, Vicki does her best to blend into medieval court life, which is a bit like dropping a teenager into Downton Abbey and telling her to stop making sarcastic remarks. The Doctor continues spinning schemes, blustering around the palace while somehow avoiding getting burned at the stake or drawn and quartered — an impressive feat given his wardrobe.

Eventually, things come to a tense political standstill. There’s no neat resolution, because this isn’t a fantasy romp with easy happy endings. Instead, the TARDIS team makes their daring escape back to their blue box, leaving the Crusades to grind on as history dictates.
