Every time-traveling alien needs a robot dog that doubles as a laser cannon.
Character Overview
K-9 was introduced in The Invisible Enemy (1977) during the Fourth Doctor’s run, and he quickly became the ultimate mix of loyal pet, walking encyclopedia, and portable weapon of mass destruction. Imagine Lassie, but with a tin exterior, a plummy voice, and the ability to vaporize baddies with a laser in his nose.
Built by Professor Marius (because why wouldn’t you build a robot dog in space?), K-9 was designed as a mobile computer and companion. He instantly won over the Doctor and Leela, despite having the personality of a smug Oxford librarian. K-9 was so clever that he often solved the plot while the humans were still scratching their heads, which made him both indispensable and mildly annoying.
Over the years, there were actually multiple K-9 models. The Doctor seemed to have a knack for either leaving him behind with companions (“Stay, boy!”) or blowing him up, only to whip out a “new and improved” version like it was a spare toaster. Each K-9 iteration was equally brilliant, equally sarcastic, and equally hampered by the fact that he couldn’t handle stairs.
K-9’s popularity outstripped many flesh-and-blood companions. He starred in spin-offs, made cameo appearances with multiple Doctors, and even got his own Australian TV series (yes, really). Despite his clunky design, dodgy remote-control movements, and tendency to run out of battery at the worst possible time, K-9 remains one of the most beloved sidekicks in the Whoniverse. He’s proof that man’s best friend might just come with a metal tail and a laser beam.
