Zoe Heriot

The genius astrophysicist who reminded everyone that the TARDIS should really come with an IQ minimum requirement.

Character Overview

Zoe Heriot (played by Wendy Padbury) is the 21st-century astrophysicist who joined the Doctor and Jamie in The Wheel in Space (1968). And by “joined,” we mean she saw a Scottish Highlander in a kilt, a hobo-looking man with a recorder, and a blue box that travels through time… and thought, Yes, this seems like a wise career move.

Zoe was essentially the walking embodiment of a scientific calculator — hyper-intelligent, logical, and capable of spitting out math equations faster than Jamie could say, “Och, what’s that then, Doctor?” She could reprogram computers, outwit Cybermen, and deliver facts with all the bluntness of a science textbook dropped on your head.

But Zoe wasn’t just brainy; she also had spunk. She had no patience for nonsense (which made her presence with the Doctor and Jamie delightfully ironic) and wasn’t afraid to stand her ground, whether facing space station bureaucrats or some bug-eyed alien demanding her loyalty. In short: she was brilliant, sassy, and didn’t hesitate to let the Doctor know when his solutions lacked a certain mathematical rigor.

Sadly, like Jamie, Zoe’s memories of her travels were wiped by the Time Lords in The War Games (1969). All she got to keep was her first adventure, which is a cruel twist — imagine experiencing all of time and space, then being sent back to spreadsheets and lab meetings. Harsh.
