Liberation

The tin dog’s barely finished rebooting before he’s dragged into a revolution, a government conspiracy, and several moments of truly painful teen dialogue.

Short Synopsis

K-9 and his new human entourage stumble into the workings of the Department—a not-at-all-subtle surveillance state bent on controlling everything from dimensional rifts to the breakfast menu. When Jorjie tries to help a mysterious group of freedom fighters, K-9 ends up liberating more than just the oppressed… including everyone’s patience.

Extended Storyline

We pick up right where Regeneration left off, with K-9 now shiny, floating, and trying to find his place in a future London that’s basically “1984 with better hair products.” Starkey and Jorjie have decided that having a laser-firing robot dog on your side makes you unstoppable—though it also makes you a magnet for government trouble.

The big bad of the week is The Department, a joyless bureaucracy run by men in grey suits who make UNIT look like a yoga retreat. They’re obsessed with controlling alien technology and, unsurprisingly, are very interested in the flying mechanical dog who just blew up some Jixen last week. Their agents are led by Inspector Drake, who spends most of the episode glaring like she’s allergic to fun.

Meanwhile, Jorjie gets wind of a group calling themselves The Resistence—freedom fighters working to expose the Department’s secrets. Convinced they’re the good guys, she sneaks off to help them, dragging Starkey and Darius along. Gryffen, of course, stays behind to mumble about quantum rifts and mutter things like, “This violates every law of metaphysics,” which is basically his catchphrase.

The Resistance, however, turns out to be a mixed bag. Some are genuine idealists, others are more “burn-it-all-down” anarchists, and at least one appears to have been dressed by the leftover wardrobe department from Mad Max: The Teen Years. Still, they believe the Department has been capturing alien creatures and conducting secret experiments—something that perks up K-9’s metal ears.

As they investigate, K-9 is captured by the Department. Big mistake. Within minutes, he’s hacked their systems, escaped his holding cell, and accidentally freed a small army of alien prisoners. The resulting chaos involves flashing lights, lots of running, and a few heroic “Affirmative!” moments as K-9 stuns guards, disables containment fields, and generally outperforms every human in the room.

By the end, the Resistance gains new momentum, the Department vows revenge, and K-9 earns his first official spot on the “Most Wanted” list—which, let’s be honest, he’s secretly proud of. The kids, realizing they’ve just started an interplanetary cold war, return to Gryffen’s lab, exhausted but exhilarated. K-9 hovers serenely, probably calculating how long it’ll take before he has to save them all again.
