The Pyramid at the End of the World

Nothing says “global crisis” like a mysterious alien pyramid plopping itself down in the middle of a military standoff.

Short Synopsis

A giant pyramid appears in a warzone. The corpse-like Monks offer to save humanity from imminent extinction — but only if humans consent to their rule. Meanwhile, a scientist accidentally creates a doomsday bacteria, and the Doctor (still blind) scrambles to stop it. Spoiler: Bill makes a desperate deal with the Monks.

Extended Storyline

Picking up from Extremis, the Monks are no longer just lurking in simulations — they’re here, in the flesh, plopping a 5,000-year-old pyramid right in the middle of modern-day Turmezistan. (Yes, the same fictional country from The Zygon Invasion. Apparently, aliens just love it there.)

The situation is already tense: U.S., Russian, and Chinese forces are all pointing weapons at each other. Then this giant stone pyramid shows up like the world’s creepiest Airbnb. The Monks emerge and politely inform everyone: “Earth’s going to end very soon. We can save you… if you let us rule.”

Naturally, world leaders aren’t thrilled about saying, “Yes, please, enslave us.” So they try to negotiate, posture, and delay. The Doctor, still blind but pretending otherwise, is brought in to consult as Earth’s resident expert on “giant ominous death monuments.”

Meanwhile, on the other side of the planet, a subplot that seems minor at first quietly becomes the whole point. A pair of scientists are working in a bio-lab, doing the usual post-apocalyptic setup:

  • One’s hungover.

  • One’s careless.

  • Together, they accidentally mix two harmless substances into a deadly super-bacterium that could wipe out all life on Earth. (Oops.)

The Monks aren’t lying. The world is ending. Not from war, but from a small, stupid human error in a lab. Which is… honestly very on brand for humanity.

The Doctor realizes the Monks’ genius: they don’t cause disasters, they just predict them. Then they show up to “save” people — but only if those people freely give consent. Because ruling by force is messy, but ruling by permission? That’s tidy.

The military tries attacking the pyramid. The Monks just swat missiles out of the air like gnats. Finally, the Doctor identifies the bio-lab as ground zero and rushes there. Problem: he’s blind, and he needs to manually input a combination lock to access the deadly bacteria chamber. Cue extreme tension.

He manages to bluff his way through, destroying the bacteria and saving the planet. But there’s a catch — his blindness nearly ruins the mission, and he can’t hide it anymore. Bill sees the truth: the Doctor can’t finish the job without sight.

Desperate, Bill bargains with the Monks. She offers her consent in exchange for restoring the Doctor’s vision. The Monks happily oblige. The Doctor’s eyesight returns just in time, but Earth has been enslaved.

The episode ends on a chilling note: humanity has been “saved”… but at the cost of freedom. And Bill knows it’s her choice that handed the Monks their victory.
