Regeneration

The Doctor’s favorite tin dog is back—new look, new universe, same attitude, and probably still better at life than his human co-stars.

Short Synopsis

In near-future London (the budget-friendly kind), an old, battered K-9 Mark I reawakens, blows himself up to save some meddling kids, and promptly regenerates into a sleeker, more aerodynamic version of himself. Cue the start of an adventure involving aliens, gadgets, and the world’s most patient robot dog babysitting a pack of teenagers.

Extended Storyline

The episode opens in 2050 London, a world where surveillance drones buzz around, the police wear trench coats that scream “futuristic discount store,” and people say “quantum” a lot to make things sound important. Beneath this slightly dystopian city, an old professor named Gryffen is working on a project involving dimensional gates—because in the Whoniverse, nothing good ever comes from a dimensional gate.

Enter our heroes (sort of): Starkey, a rebellious teen with a gift for hacking and a hairstyle clearly left over from 2009; Jorjie, the daughter of a high-ranking police officer with a knack for trouble; and Darius, Gryffen’s perpetually grumpy assistant who seems to have majored in sarcasm. Together, they accidentally unleash some alien fugitives from another dimension, because of course they do.

Luckily—or unluckily—someone else pops through that gate too: a battered, somewhat ancient-looking K-9 Mark I, apparently on the run from said aliens. He’s dusty, dented, and still has that unmistakable chipper attitude that says, “Danger, master, but I’ll handle it!” Within minutes of showing up, he self-destructs to stop the aliens and save the humans. Yes, he explodes in the first episode. That’s what you call confidence.

But hold your tears (and your spare parts). From the ashes rises a brand-new K-9—a shiny, hovering, chrome-plated upgrade with blue LEDs, better aim, and possibly faster Wi-Fi. It’s like the iDog just evolved into an actual superhero. His new catchphrase: “Affirmative!”—still delivered with the same perky determination that could melt a Cyberman’s heart.

The aliens, known as the Jixen, are suitably monstrous and slime-covered, snarling through most of the episode while trying to reclaim their stolen technology. Gryffen and the kids, meanwhile, try to wrap their heads around this snarky robotic dog who insists on calling everyone “master” while quoting military protocols. It’s a glorious mess of sci-fi tropes and Saturday-morning earnestness.

By the end, K-9 successfully drives the Jixen back through the portal, saves the humans, and establishes his new purpose: defending Earth (again) from whatever comes next. Gryffen decides to keep the dimensional gate hidden, the kids form an uneasy alliance, and K-9—now fully regenerated—hovers into his new life as the only sane being in the building.
