The science teacher who thought he was on a school field trip… until the Daleks showed up.
Character Overview
Ian Chesterton (played by William Russell) was the Coal Hill School science teacher who, along with Barbara Wright, stumbled into the TARDIS after following their curious student Susan home. One minute he’s grading physics homework, the next he’s stuck in a time machine arguing with a grumpy old man who doesn’t know how to steer it.
Ian was the original “action companion” — the dependable bloke who could wrestle cavemen, tackle alien guards, and heroically fling himself into danger while everyone else shouted “No, Ian, don’t!” He was the muscle of the early crew, but not the brainless kind: Ian balanced Barbara’s compassion with a steady pragmatism and often ended up being the one who figured out how to get the group out of a jam. (Not bad for a man who probably thought “The Daleks” sounded like a 1960s skiffle band.)
Despite constantly being dragged into lethal situations, Ian handled time travel with a stiff upper lip and a remarkable ability to roll with the absurd. Shrinking to ant-size in Planet of Giants? Fine. Being locked up by Marco Polo for several weeks? Mildly inconvenient. Fighting robot doubles of himself in The Chase? Just another Tuesday.
Like Barbara, Ian developed into a de facto parent figure for the TARDIS crew, grounding both Susan and the Doctor when things spiraled into chaos (which was roughly every five minutes). He was brave without being reckless, noble without being smug, and occasionally so self-sacrificing that you wanted to shake him and shout, “Ian, mate, let the Daleks handle this one.”
In the end, Ian and Barbara managed to return home together in The Chase. Presumably, Ian went right back to teaching science, now with the added authority of someone who’s personally punched a Dalek.
