Because sometimes the universe really does need a retired guy with a packed lunch and strong opinions about soil.
Character Overview
Brian Williams, father of Rory and therefore unwitting grandfather-in-law to River Song (try untangling that family tree), strolled into Doctor Who looking like a man who only wanted to water his plants and avoid surprises. Instead, he discovered his son had been gallivanting through time and space with a bowtie-wearing alien and Amy Pond, who—let’s be honest—was clearly too good for Rory until he turned into a legend.
Played to perfection by Mark Williams (aka Arthur Weasley with a screwdriver set), Brian immediately became a fan favorite in Dinosaurs on a Spaceship, where his main concerns were:
-
How does one make tea in space?
-
Is the TARDIS insured?
-
Did anyone remember to pack sandwiches?
Brian wasn’t a fighter, a genius, or a chosen one. He was a normal dad with thermos flasks and a readiness to ask if someone had wiped their feet before stepping in the TARDIS. His practical, grounded nature not only highlighted Rory’s everyman charm but also gave Amy and the Doctor a much-needed reminder: sometimes the bravest thing in the universe is just showing up.
And while Brian’s run was tragically short (he should’ve been the one to defeat the Daleks with a spade, frankly), his presence left a surprisingly poignant mark on the series. After all, this was the man who quietly waited for his son and daughter-in-law to return from adventures, making sandwiches in case they were hungry. It doesn’t get more dad than that.
