The Awakening

It’s the 17th century… no, wait, it’s the 1980s… oh hang on, it’s aliens again. Time for some rural mayhem!

Short Synopsis

The Doctor, Tegan, and Turlough arrive in the quaint village of Little Hodcombe, expecting tea and scones. Instead, they stumble into a Civil War re-enactment gone horribly wrong thanks to the Malus, an ancient alien entity buried under the local church. Cue possessed villagers, creepy visions, and a giant stone face belching smoke like an angry fireplace.

Extended Storyline

Landing in 1984 (because Doctor Who couldn’t resist doubling as a time capsule), the Doctor plans a quick stop so Tegan can visit her grandfather, only to find Little Hodcombe in chaos. The locals are staging a Civil War re-enactment, but instead of harmless historical cosplay, things have turned deadly serious.

At the heart of the madness is the Malus, a malevolent alien war machine buried beneath the village church. Awakened by the violent energy of humans playing soldier, it manipulates events, driving villagers into bloodlust while tormenting others with ghostly visions of the past. Essentially, it’s a sentient fog machine with a side hustle in psychological warfare.

Sir George Hutchinson, the pompous squire organizing the re-enactment, is under the Malus’ thrall and happily encourages the carnage. He’s proof that giving any middle-aged Englishman a musket and the excuse of “historical authenticity” is a bad idea. Meanwhile, Tegan’s grandfather, Andrew, is among the captives, giving her some actual family stakes for once.

The Doctor quickly identifies the Malus as an alien leftover from a failed invasion centuries earlier, now reduced to using human violence as its battery pack. The more people fight, the stronger it gets — which explains why it looks so smug whenever someone picks up a sword.

Things escalate with ghostly soldiers charging through walls, villagers turning homicidal, and the Malus itself bursting forth from the church wall in the form of a giant stone face that looks like it belongs on a bad prog rock album cover. Just when it seems unstoppable, the Doctor engineers its destruction, leaving the church in ruins and the villagers free from its influence.

The Doctor, Tegan, and Turlough slip away, leaving the villagers to rebuild, probably with a newfound suspicion of both historical pageants and masonry.
