Fear Death by Water

The ocean is cold. The storm is relentless. And the Doctor has just thrown himself into its teeth. Splash zone: escalated.

Short Synopsis

In 1838 Northumberland, the TARDIS crash-lands aboard a sinking steamship. While the survivors scramble for safety and the legendary lighthouse keeper’s daughter Grace Darling rows into history, the Doctor senses something far darker beneath the waves: a monster born of storm and sorrow, stealing souls from the drowned. And—of course—it’s very real.

Extended Storyline

The TARDIS materializes violently in the dark waters of the North Sea. The Doctor tumbles out into chaos—waves crashing, ship splitting, steam hissing like an angry kettle. Grace Darling, in her famous rescue boat, spots the Doctor and Ruby (yes—Ruby Sunday is likely along for the ride) amid the wreckage and makes a decision: heroism applies here.

Aboard the steamer Eden’s Hope (or something similarly tragic), passengers and crew are battling nature—and something unnatural. The Doctor senses the unnatural almost immediately: ghostly lights under the waves, anguished voices carried in the winds, and a chill that isn’t from the sea. Grace, meanwhile, has a secret vision from the storm: enormous eyes shining in the dark, a creature of the deep, watching. She thought it was wind, fear, imagination. The Doctor knows better.

As the survivors are ferried to a nearby lighthouse, the plot thickens. The Doctor investigates the ship’s cargo and finds references to lost wrecks, stolen souls, and a signal trapped beneath the sea. Grace confides that the vision is haunting her—she’s become a figure of legend, but behind the fame lies fear. The Doctor, sensitive to this kind of emotional wreckage, gently takes Grace’s side: fame is one thing; being haunted is another entirely.

When the storm reaches its crescendo, the Doctor, Grace, and Ruby dive into the sea (yes, actual diving. Bring your wetsuit) to explore an underwater cavern revealed by the ship’s wreck. There they find the creature: the Leviathan of the deep, a massive being feeding on the tragedy of shipwrecks and the souls of those lost. It’s as much spiritual horror as monster movie. TARDIS Guide+1

The Doctor negotiates—not with weapons but with water, empathy, and the idea that the Leviathan doesn’t need to destroy; it needs to be heard. Grace helps by shining her lighthouse beam not just into the sea but into the creature’s darkness, offering a beacon of connection. The submarine storm subsides. The creature retreats. The seas calm (for now). Grace goes home, still legendary, but carrying something stronger than fame—a purpose. The Doctor departs, salt water still dripping off his coat.
