The one where the Doctor takes Ace to a haunted house to “help her work through her issues,” only to unleash a cosmic argument about evolution, dinner etiquette, and the creepy guy in the basement.
Short Synopsis
The Doctor drags Ace to Gabriel Chase, a Victorian mansion she once burned down in the future. Inside, they find a house full of eccentric characters — and one very cranky alien obsessed with cataloguing evolution. Chaos, metaphors, and nightmares ensue.
Extended Storyline
We begin in Gabriel Chase, a spooky mansion in late-Victorian England. The Doctor, being the ultimate cosmic therapist, brings Ace here specifically because she confessed she once torched the place in 1983. Nothing says “healing your trauma” like forcing your teenage companion to confront the literal haunted house of her nightmares.
The house itself is occupied by Josiah Smith, a gentleman with an unhealthy obsession with taxidermy and a suspiciously waxy smile. He seems human… except he’s actually an alien experiment gone rogue. Lurking around are a sinister butler (Nimrod, who’s actually a prehistoric caveman preserved from the dawn of time), an eccentric housekeeper who may or may not be hypnotized, and a collection of guests who act like they’re auditioning for Downton Abbey: Gothic Edition.
Oh, and in the basement? There’s “Control” — a feral, caged creature who shrieks and claws at the bars. She’s the wild opposite of Josiah, the “civilized” half of the alien experiment. Both of them are subjects of Light, the alien surveyor who originally came to Earth to catalogue all life and evolution. Light, unfortunately, doesn’t cope well with change — which is awkward, since Earth is basically a big spinning ball of constant evolutionary chaos.
The Doctor and Ace wander through this madhouse trying to piece it together. Josiah, the pseudo-Victorian alien, is plotting to take over the British Empire by assassinating Queen Victoria (because if you’re going to scheme, aim high). Control slowly becomes more human and self-aware. Ace is forced to face her deep-seated terror of the house, reliving the nightmarish vibes that drove her to burn it down in the first place. And Light finally wakes up… only to throw a tantrum when he realizes his catalog of life is already out of date. He wanted everything neatly pinned and labeled like one of Josiah’s butterflies, but Earth just won’t stop evolving.
Cue the climax: Light goes full meltdown mode, deciding if he can’t catalogue evolution, he’ll just end it by freezing everything forever. The Doctor, in peak manipulative mode, goads Light into logical contradictions until the alien collapses into his own energy, dissipating into nothingness. Score one for philosophy and psychological warfare.
Meanwhile, Control gains her freedom, Josiah is contained, and the house… well, it still feels like it should be condemned. Ace, however, takes a big step forward by confronting her fears head-on. She and the Doctor leave the smoldering emotional wreckage behind — though not before Ace mutters that one day, she will torch this house.
