Yaz wants to learn about her grandmother’s past. The Doctor obliges. Turns out Grandma’s youth involved forbidden love, the Partition of India, and… supposedly demonic aliens lurking in the woods. Happy family reunion!
Short Synopsis
Yaz convinces the Doctor to take her back in time to learn her Nani’s secret history. They arrive in Punjab, 1947, during the chaos of Partition, where religious and political tensions are tearing families apart. Meanwhile, hooded “demons” seem to stalk the area — but the truth is more tragic than monstrous.
Extended Storyline
Yaz’s grandmother Umbreen hands her a broken watch and cryptic hints about her past. Naturally, Yaz says: “Doctor, fire up the TARDIS.” (The Doctor, reluctantly but intrigued, says yes because family drama is catnip.)
The fam materializes in rural Punjab in 1947, and everyone immediately notes the strangeness of Umbreen’s story. For one thing, she’s about to marry a man named Prem. For another, Prem is Hindu. Umbreen is Muslim. And if you know anything about Partition, you know this is a recipe for heartbreak.
Hovering over all this are eerie alien figures: the Thijarian, who look like skeletal assassins wrapped in cloaks, prowling around like villains in a ghost story. Everyone assumes they’re here to mess with history, steal souls, or ruin weddings. Because of course aliens crash weddings in Doctor Who.
The Doctor investigates, and — plot twist — the Thijarian are not evil. Once the galaxy’s deadliest assassins, they’ve now become witnesses: they honor the dead who die alone, remembering those forgotten by history. Which means if they’re hanging around here… people are about to die. A lot of them.
Meanwhile, Yaz and the others realize Umbreen’s marriage is doomed not because of alien intervention, but because history itself is brutal. Partition is underway — India being divided into India and Pakistan — and neighbors, even families, are turning on each other along religious lines. Prem’s own brother joins armed militants who want Umbreen gone. The tension builds with every scene: Umbreen defiantly marries Prem, the Doctor officiating with a string and two sticks as her “holy relics.” It’s a small act of joy in the middle of catastrophe.
But history cannot be rewritten. The Doctor knows it, and eventually so do the others. Prem refuses to flee; he stays to protect Umbreen, even knowing his brother has betrayed him. The wedding is bittersweet — followed by the inevitable. As Umbreen leaves, Prem is murdered by his own brother’s militia, his body left in the dust. The Thijarian stand vigil, recording his death, ensuring he is not forgotten.
Back in the present, Yaz hugs her grandmother tighter, realizing Nani’s secrets weren’t shameful — they were unbearably sad. Her broken watch is a relic of love and loss, and Yaz is left shaken by how much history lives inside the people we think we know best.
