Never look back… unless you want nightmares.
Short Synopsis
The Doctor disappears on a Welsh cliffside, Ruby is stalked by a mysterious figure who never comes closer than 73 yards, and we all learn that country walks are dangerous.
Extended Storyline
The Doctor and Ruby land in Wales, which in Doctor Who tradition means “something spooky is about to happen.” No aliens in sight, just rolling hills, windswept cliffs, and the faint whiff of ominous folklore. The Doctor mutters about “land of stories” and “old magic,” which is basically Time Lord-speak for “we’re about to regret this walk.”
Then, mid-sentence, poof — the Doctor vanishes. One second he’s there, the next he’s gone. No TARDIS, no vortex, just… gone. Ruby turns around and sees a woman standing exactly 73 yards away. Not 72. Not 74. Always 73.
And here’s the kicker: Ruby can never get closer. If she approaches, the woman stays out of reach. If Ruby runs, the woman follows. People who do get close to the woman run away screaming, utterly terrified. It’s like having a personal stalker who weaponizes existential dread.
So Ruby does what any sensible person would: she panics. Then she adapts. Because she’s Ruby Sunday, and when the universe throws her a supernatural stalker, she rolls with it. She builds her life around the ever-present figure: jobs, friendships, relationships. The woman is always there, haunting her like a living shadow.
The episode unfolds like a surreal nightmare. Ruby investigates, digging into Welsh folklore, political conspiracy, and even crossing paths with a corrupt Prime Minister (because apparently being stalked isn’t stressful enough). Every thread ties back to the woman at 73 yards, but no explanation sticks. Is it magic? Alien tech? The universe punishing her? Ruby never gets a straight answer — and the audience is left just as unsettled.
The true brilliance of 73 Yards is its commitment to ambiguity. Ruby grows older, decades pass, and still the figure remains. Her life is shaped — and limited — by this curse. In a way, the woman becomes her constant companion, as unyielding as the Doctor himself.
And then, in her old age, Ruby walks back to the cliff where it all began. She steps into the same place the Doctor vanished — and suddenly, we loop back. It was Ruby all along. She was the figure. The haunting was herself, watching over her younger self. A time loop, a curse, a paradox — take your pick. The Doctor returns, none the wiser, while Ruby carries the weight of what she’s endured.
It’s haunting, melancholic, and utterly unlike anything else this season.
