Ruby Sunday

When you’re found on a church doorstep on Christmas Eve, the universe practically guarantees you a weird life.

Character Overview

Ruby Sunday was the Fifteenth Doctor’s first full-time companion — and what an entrance she made. Introduced via a Christmas musical special with goblins, a baby-snatching subplot, and more glitter than a pantomime finale, Ruby quickly cemented herself as one of those companions who could keep pace with the Doctor’s chaos while looking fabulous in oversized coats.

Her story began with a mystery baked right in: abandoned as a baby on a church doorstep on Christmas Eve, with her adoptive mum Carla raising her into the whip-smart, sarcastic adventurer who answered the TARDIS call. Naturally, this led to half the fandom whispering theories about her true origins (Time Lord? Lost goddess? A manifestation of RTD’s dramatic flair?) while the other half just enjoyed watching her banter with the Doctor.

But like all good Doctor Who eras, change was inevitable. After a season of snow monsters, musical goblins, and intergalactic near-death experiences, Ruby’s journey came to a close. She stepped away from the TARDIS to let the Doctor carry on with his next main traveling partner, Belinda Chandra. Ruby’s presence, however, still echoes through the Fifteenth Doctor’s era — not just because she reappeared later, but because she set the tone for this incarnation: bold, emotional, and very good at running in impractical footwear.

She may no longer be the Doctor’s day-to-day companion, but Ruby Sunday remains one of the most memorable “firsts” in modern Who — a companion whose mystery, charm, and sharp humor made sure the Fifteenth Doctor didn’t have to face his first adventures alone.
