David Tennant…Again (1971-)
David Tennant returned in 2022 as the Fourteenth Doctor, proving once and for all that regeneration is less of a “new lease on life” and more of a timey-wimey game of musical chairs with your own face. Yes, the Tenth Doctor came back—but this time he had slightly different clothes, a fresh number, and even more wrinkles from worrying about the universe.
The Fourteenth Doctor arrived after Jodie Whittaker’s Thirteenth quite literally burst into a glorious rainbow firework. Instead of a brand-new face, however, the Doctor looked into a mirror and went: “Wait, I know those teeth.” Fans, meanwhile, screamed, fainted, and scrambled to explain it on message boards before Russell T Davies smugly whispered, “All will be revealed… eventually.”
This wasn’t Tennant doing a rerun—his Fourteenth Doctor was older, wiser, and far more aware of his emotional baggage (which could fill several TARDIS closets). He carried the joy, guilt, and manic energy of his Tenth incarnation, but with the added wisdom that comes from realizing you’ve probably been eating too many fish fingers and custard over the centuries.
The Fourteenth Doctor’s short tenure (2022–2023) was designed as a celebratory victory lap for the show’s 60th anniversary. He reunited with Donna Noble (Catherine Tate), the companion who once had her memories wiped to save her life. Their dynamic picked up as if no time had passed: bickering, bonding, and delivering emotional punches strong enough to knock out a Dalek fleet.
Fourteenth’s wardrobe was basically Tenth Doctor: The Sequel—a suit, long coat, but now with bold patterns and snazzy sneakers. Think: “Dad who discovered Etsy.” And, of course, the Sonic Screwdriver got yet another redesign, because merchandising.
His era featured giant cosmic mysteries, returning villains, and more tears than the BBC’s annual Christmas special. In typical Tennant fashion, he gave audiences laughter, heartbreak, and one last gut-wrenching “I don’t want to go”moment—only this time, he actually did.
He regenerated in 2023 into the Fifteenth Doctor (Ncuti Gatwa), handing over the keys to the TARDIS with a grin and the kind of charm only David Tennant can pull off.
👉 The Fourteenth Doctor was a rare encore performance: familiar face, new number, and proof that sometimes, the universe just can’t resist fan service done right.
