The Creature from the Pit

On a jungle planet, the Doctor meets a lonely alien, a power-mad matriarch, and a monster that launched a thousand awkward giggles.

Short Synopsis

The Doctor and Romana land on Chloris, where Lady Adrasta hoards metal like a dragon and feeds her enemies to a mysterious “Creature” lurking in a pit. Turns out the Creature is actually an alien ambassador, stuck in a cave thanks to Adrasta’s greed. The Doctor, Romana, and K-9 unravel the mess while viewers try desperately not to make jokes about the monster’s, er, appendages.

Extended Storyline

The adventure begins when the TARDIS crash-lands in a lush jungle on the planet Chloris. It’s green, it’s humid, and Romana spends most of the landing glaring at the Doctor for being so enthusiastic about giant alien eggs. They quickly stumble upon a giant metal shell — which is rare here because Chloris is metal-poor, and thus everything metallic is more valuable than a limited-edition vinyl release on eBay.

Enter Lady Adrasta, the local tyrant who has cornered the market on all the planet’s metal. She rules with an iron (well, bronze) fist and ensures that anyone who annoys her ends up being chucked into “The Pit.” It’s a simple management style: fewer complaints, more screaming.

The “Pit” itself houses the titular Creature, a massive, green, tentacled monster that makes its grand entrance in a way that launched endless viewer sniggers. Let’s just say that one of its appendages, used to communicate with the Doctor, looks… unfortunate. Children asked awkward questions. Adults spat out their tea. Props department employees hid behind the sofa.

Despite its terrifying (and suggestive) exterior, the Creature turns out to be Erato, an ambassador from the Tythonian race. He came to Chloris offering a trade deal: metal for chlorophyll. But instead of welcoming this mutually beneficial agreement, Adrasta had him thrown in the pit. Why? Because if anyone else got their hands on metal, she’d lose her monopoly. So, rather than share resources, she opted for “imprison the alien in a hole for decades.” Nice.

Naturally, the Doctor decides to befriend Erato, which involves a lot of hand gestures, alien humming, and trying not to look directly at the… tentacle. Romana helps by being pragmatic and competent, while K-9 alternates between blasting guards and getting stuck in shrubbery.

Meanwhile, a gaggle of bandits bumble about the jungle trying to nick whatever metal scraps they can find. They’re less “fearsome raiders” and more “Monty Python extras who wandered onto the wrong set.”

Eventually, the Doctor discovers the full truth: Erato was trying to save Chloris from an approaching neutron star. With his knowledge and some help from the Doctor, they whip up an improvised plan to deflect the star using the TARDIS and a hastily rigged gravity beam. Yes, the story escalates from “alien in a cave” to “astronomical crisis” faster than you can say “Douglas Adams was script editor.”

Adrasta gets her comeuppance (via pit, of course), the bandits remain incompetent, and Erato finally gets to deliver his trade deal. The Doctor, Romana, and K-9 leave Chloris in slightly better shape than they found it, though probably with generations of viewers scarred by the Creature’s appearance.
