New Daleks OK?

So tell me, is it OK to admit I don't mind the new Daleks? It's been awhile since they've graced our screens. Has it been long enough that we can forget all of the divisive rhetoric and just come together as Who fans. No more nasty comments about how they look like Power Rangers or how they've got a lot of 'junk in the trunk'. Some people like a little junk in the trunk. Maybe other Daleks look at the big butts and think, "Dammm, you got it goin' on , baby." Hah, it's always fun to think of Daleks saying out of character things. But I digress...

One of the things I've liked about the new Doctor Who series, is seeing some of the classic monsters brought into the present and re-imagined. Take the Cybermen for example, you couldn't have done a better job of improving on the Cybermen. With more money for costumes, they actually looked like metal men and not men in silver rubber suits.

Then of course we have the Sontarans. Perhaps not that much of a difference from the past, but again, better makeup and costuming techniques. Of course the Silurians were updated too. I personally would have more of a nod to the three eyed version, but again they looked excellent. Is it any wonder then that producers felt it was time to update the Daleks?

Now I know I may have also had my share of criticism for the new Daleks, but somewhere along the way, they've grown on me a bit. Perhaps it's time to let go of the past and venture into the future. Sure the old Daleks were nice, but they were really a bit tired. So I say more power to the new Daleks. Dare I say it, "Go, Go Power Daleks".

Doctor Riot?

We've grown used to seeing mention of the Doctor on Futurama and the Simpsons, but doesn't it seem that our favorite Time Lord is getting noticed by more and more of Hollywood. It's the new in thing to make references to Doctor Who in unrelated shows. From NCIS to last weeks Grey's Anatomy, the Doctor is popping up everywhere.

The Doctors of Seattle were inundated last week by a mass of injured comic con fans. Apparently a riot was started by the prospects of receiving a limited edition TARDIS signed by Russell T. Davies. In the mad rush to be one of the few to receive the precious toy, many were trampled and injured. One poor fan lost an ear in his quest for Whovian bliss. The good news for those that managed to snag a blue box, they were apparently selling for $7500 on Ebay.

Those who watched last Friday's episode of Supernatural may also have noticed a discreet reference to the traveling Time Lord, or more precisely to the Doctor's companion. Regular Supernatural viewers know that Sam and Dean Winchester like to use the names of classic rock stars whenever they need a cover identity. This time however, it was one of the critters they hunt that needed a cover I.D., and the name she chose was Amy Pond.  Sam says "Amy Pond, nice name."

Browser Worlds

So how many of you have tried the new MMO game Doctor Who: Worlds in Time? It is a browser based game that allows you to help the Doctor battle many adversaries both from the classic series and from the new series, although so far, the Doctor seems to spend more time in the TARDIS than out running around with you the player.

You first log into the game and are given four races to choose from as your avatar: human, cat, silurian or tree. The Doctor then introduces you to the storyline and tells you he needs you to track down shards that are causing major trouble in time. From then on you pretty much don't see the Doctor at all, but you do begin following a plot that involves many humans, autons, silurians and other characters. The story progresses as you complete puzzles and simple tasks. Along the way you can either group up with other players or computer assistants to complete the tasks.

I like the cartoon look of this game, and it is fun to see some of the characters we all know and love in this quirky style. Gameplay, however, is fairly limited, and involves repetitively completing the same basic puzzles over and over again. The main object seems to be to accumulate items to display in your TARDIS room or clothes to customize your avatar's look.

That appears to be one revenue stream the game will rely on, as it does offer opportunities to buy some nifty clothes and accessories from it's online shop by using a credit card or Paypal.

This is, so far, a free game to play, so taking that into account, it's worth spending a few hours on, and perhaps in the future we can expect more from the gameplay. Not sure if the game will continue to be free down the road, but time will tell.
